Govind Ballabh Pant

On 7th March, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh paid tribute to Govind Ballabh (G.B.) Pant (1887-1961), a prominent freedom fighter and the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, on his death anniversary.

Early Life of GB Pant:
Born in Almora, Uttarakhand, Pant was influenced by prominent leaders like Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Madan Mohan Malaviya.

Role in the Freedom Struggle:
Pant was an active participant in the Salt March (1930), the Civil Disobedience Movement (1930), and the Quit India Movement (1942).

Political Career:


He was a member of the Constituent Assembly and played a significant role in shaping the Indian Constitution. As the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, he focused on the abolition of Zamindari and modernization efforts.

Union Home Minister:
In 1955, Pant was appointed Union Home Minister by Jawaharlal Nehru, and he played a pivotal role in establishing Hindi as one of India’s official languages.

Honours and Legacy:
Pant was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1957. He mentored several prominent leaders, including Chaudhary Charan Singh, leaving behind a lasting political legacy.
