According to the controversial sunspot theory, great storms on the surface of the sun hurl streams of solar particles into the atmosphere, causing a shift in the weather on earth.

A typical sunspot consists of a dark central umbra surrounded by lighter penumbra of light and dark threads extending out form the center like the spokes of a wheel. Actually, the sunspots are cooler than the rest of the photosphere, which may account for their color. Typically, the temperature in a sunspot umbra is about 4000 K, whereas the temperature in a penumbra registers 5500 k, and the granules outside the spot are 6000K.

Sunspots have been observed in arrangements of one to more than one hundred spots, but they tend to occur in pairs. There is also a marked tendency for the two spots of a pair to have opposite magnetic polarities. Consequently, the strength of the magnetic field associated with any given sunspot is closely related to the spot’s size.

Although there is no theory that completely explains the nature and function of sunspots, several models attempt to relate the phenomenon to magnetic fields along the lines of longitude from the north and south poles of the sun.

A volcano is an aperture in the earth’s crust that allows gases and solid fragment to be discharged. The word “volcano” refers to both the vent and the conical mountain that is built up by the ejected material. At the apex of the mountain there is usually a crater around the vent. Belts of volcanoes can be found along the crest of the ideation ridge system. They are also found at places on the earth’s crust where plate boundaries are converging, such as the Assure surrounding the Pacific Ocean and along the Mediterranean Sea.

Volcanic eruptions take the form of one or more of the following phases: Hawaiian, Strombolian, Vulcanian, and Peleean. The Hawaiian phase consists of relatively quiet effusions, unaccompanied by explosions or ejections of fragments. In the stromobolian phase, there is a continuous but mild discharge of viscous lava during recurring explosions that produce luminous clouds. The Vulcanian phase is a more explosive one, in which masses of solid and liquid rock erupts into the air and clouds of vapor form over the crater. The peleean is the most violent phase, emitting “clouds” of fine ash, hot gas-charged fragments of lava, and superheated steam that travel downhill at great speed and can annihilate all life in their path. In this phase, the whole mountain might even be blown apart. These eruptions may also be accompanied by torrential rains.

A pilot cannot fly a plane by sight alone. In many conditions, such as flying at night and leading in dense fog, a pilot must use radar, an alternative way of navigating. Since human eyes are not very good at determining speeds of approaching objects, radar can show a pilot how fast nearby planers are moving. The basic principle of radar is exemplified by what happens when one shouts in a cave. The echoes of the sounds against the walls help a person determine the size of the cave.
