A recent study indicates that climate change is increasing the risk of algal blooms in the River Thames, England, despite a significant 80% reduction in phosphorus levels over the past four decades.

An algal bloom refers to the rapid overgrowth of microscopic algae or algae-like bacteria in freshwater, saltwater, or brackish environments.

Key Findings:

  • Rising river temperatures are fueling the growth of spring diatom blooms and summer cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) blooms. These blooms deplete oxygen, harm aquatic life, and raise the cost of drinking water treatment.
  • Algal blooms also disrupt recreational activities, such as fishing and swimming.
  • Despite an 80% reduction in phosphorus since 1985, its concentration remains above safe levels, continuing to sustain algal growth.
  • Excess nitrogen and phosphorus block sunlight and deplete oxygen, endangering marine ecosystems.

River Thames:

  • The River Thames is 346 km long, making it the longest river in England and the second-longest in the UK after the River Severn.
  • It originates from Thames Head in Gloucestershire and flows into the North Sea through the Thames Estuary, with the Nore Sandbank at its mouth.
  • London lies along the Thames, and the river provides two-thirds of the city’s drinking water, in addition to serving as a crucial trade route.
