                 16.   C    refers to the second paragraph. The words ‘darkest point of all’ in the last sentence can be interpreted as the grimmest aspect. So, option C is the apt choice.

               17.    A   The paragraph begins with three questions. The last question ‘is it plausible….. Violence? ‘Is the issue which the passage focuses on? The author has criticized US- type of interventions, but his primary objective is not that. So, option B can be ruled out. Option C is much generalized and ‘condemned’ does not fit in. Option D is inaccurate. The author has discussed the nature and effects of uncivil wars, not its causes. He does not make democracy and issue.

             18.    D   Refer to the last paragraph. The sixth and seventh sentences provide the clue.
