Sentence Correction Home Exercise 01, DIRECTIONS for questions 6 to 10:

DIRECTIONS for questions 6 to 10: Each of the following questions consists of a sentence, with some parts of it underlined which could be erroneous. From among the choices given, you have to select an answer that is the best possible replacement for the underlined part of the key sentence. While choosing the right answer, please pay particular attention to the syntax, idiom, usage and economy of words being used.

6.       A    B uses knows which is a wrong verb in the context of the subject given here. Option C changes the intended meaning by introducing them. Option D uses would twice for no reason. Hence A.

7.       A      Distinguish always takes the preposition from; consequently, option b is wrong here. Option D uses between, which is better suited after suited after, differentiate. Besides, or is redundant here. Hence A.

8.       D   the problem here is that the pronoun “those” should refer to an impersonal object or idea, not a person, as is the case here. Options A, B and C can be ruled out for this reason itself.

9.       C   it is not the person, who is a violation of something; violation keeping this in mind, we can safely rule out options A and B.  Option D puts prominently quite for away from the words the lowest, which is a grammatical fallacy. It tends to violate the principle of proximity. Hence [C]

10.       D     Option B suggests as if the association (placed after the comma) were approaching this fiure. This is a nonsensical idea. C distorts the intended meaning by conveying that the prediction will be made in the 21st century. Now approaching itself conveys a continuous action. We do not need to qualify it by using has been. Hence option A is also ruled out. Hence D.
