Sentence Correction Home Exercise 01, DIRECTIONS for questions 11 to 15:

DIRECTIONS for questions 11 to 15: Each of the following questions consists of a sentence, with some parts of it underlined which could be erroneous. From among the choices given, you have to select an answer that is the best possible replacement for the underlined part of the key sentence. While choosing the right answer, please pay particular attention to the syntax, idiom, usage and economy of words being used.


11.   According to the professor’s philosophy, the antidote to envy is one’s own work, always one’s own work: not thinking about it, not assessing it, but simple doing it.

11.       A    option B is changing the original meaning by saying because you don’t So is true of even C, which puts always before one’s Besides option C presents a non-parallel structure as is uses simply to do which does not agree with either thinking or assessing. D omits the word work from the phrase. Hence A.

12.       D    Options A, B and C are not idiomatic as helpful should be followed by in. Hence [ D]

13.       D       Please note the word “between” carefully. It has to be followed by hand, which is true of options C and D only. Option C is incorrect as it then uses the past tense needlessly.

14.       D   Option C  contains topsy  turvy version of the original, which distorts the intended meaning, options A and B start with added to, which makes both of them quite unidiomatic. Hence [ D]
  15. C   Chance as a noun is usually followed by of or to, thus leaving us options B, C and D.  Out of  these possibilities, B and D distort the meaning as the survivors and not recognizing or treating their own symptoms. Rather, they are getting it done by someone else. Hence [ C]
